During that day, 7 country teams (MSD Colleagues and startups) were pitching their proposals in front of an outstanding jury.

GAP pro is a search engine for diseases. Physicians and patients enter symptoms, and receive a list of matching causes - sorted by probability.


Grupo Pulso is a 38 years old multinational SME specialized in the innovative management of clinical knowledge. They develop projects to support the digital transformation of health professionals and institutions.

Nico Van Hoecke

MSD President for Middle East and Africa (MEA) overseeing the human health business in 70+ countries and close to 1700 staff. In his position as President, Nico ensures that countries in MEA are well equipped and able to offer patients, customers and governments with MSD’s wide range of lifesaving medicines and vaccines. Prior to taking up his post as MEA President, Nico led the Finance Organization for MSD’s Emerging Markets, overseeing the financial departments of all countries in Latin America, EEMEA and Asia Pacific. Nico started his tenure within MEA in 2009 as Regional Finance lead for the region. This was followed by two years as Business & Commercial Operations lead for the same region. Nico is a Belgian National with a Masters in Corporate Income Taxes; a Masters in Commercial Sciences, Specialty in Accountancy; and a Bachelor’s Degree in Commercial Sciences all from EHSAL in Brussels. 

Wim Vandenhouweele

Masters in Sports-physiology at University Ghent, Belgium, Marketing at EHSAL Brussels, Belgium and IEP at INSEAD, Fontainebleau, France. After joining MSD Belgium in 1983, he has worked also in MSD Netherlands, MSD China and Merck's global headquarters in the US, in sales, country, regional and global marketing, strategy, PPP and commercial operation roles.  Currently, he is Commercial Innovation for Merck international. He is based in the US (New Jersey) and works very closely with country teams to manage a portfolio of the most innovative initiatives through ideation, feasibility and pilot stages, with multiple of them now being scaled across many countries.

Thomas Brenzikofer

Member of the Board, Public Relations, Senior Project Manager ICT & Precision Medicine. Thomas Brenzikofer has been a member of the Management Board since January 2016. Since January 2017, as the board member responsible for ICT, he has focused on developing the Precision Medicine functional area under the "DayOne" label, and is the media spokesperson for He was previously Head of Marketing & Communications. was formed from the merger of BaselArea, i-net , and the CBP. From November 2012 to December 2015, Thomas Brenzikofer was Deputy CEO, Head of Communications and Manager of ICT Technology for i-net innovation networks Switzerland

Mauricio Campos

CIO for Middle East and Africa (MEA) responsible for digital and technology in a large and diverse region with 70+ countries and close to 1700 users. Based out of Luzern, Mauricio is also a certified professional coach, a social entrepreneur, yoga instructor & practitioner, father of two and current student of the Executive Global MBA program at IE. Originally from Argentina, in his last 10 years as part of MSD family he had the chance to live and work in Spain, Italy, Turkey and Switzerland. Today his strong passion for people, innovation, health care and business are brought together as part of MSD Innovation factory initiative.

Thomas Lang

Thomas Lang was named Managing Director MSD Switzerland effective September 1st, 2016.

Thomas was born and grew up in Germany and is a Medical Doctor by training. Prior to joining MSD in 2001 he did acquire board certification as a general surgeon. Thomas did start his career at MSD Germany in Clinical Research and held roles in Medical Affairs with increasing responsibilities. During 2004-2006 he went on an US Assignment, based in Rahway, NJ, working for Merck Research Laboratories.  Back in Germany he was the Research Director for the German Clinical Research Unit and form 2007-2012 he served as the Medical Director for MSD. In 2012 he transitioned into the role of the Director Market Access. Before he moved to Switzerland in late 2016 he was running the Business Unit Primary Care at MSD Germany starting 2015.
